Pets""12

February is known as “Responsible Pet Owner Month,” which is a great time to make sure that your pets are as safe and happy as possible. Look over the following tips to see if you’re missing out on any responsible pet owner tasks.

WORK ON SOCIALIZATION

Socializing pets is an important part of helping them become more confident and comfortable in new surroundings or when meeting new people and other pets. Bring your pets to a local park, a friend’s house and any other pet-friendly places in the area. You can also socialize your pets while working on teaching them to follow commands by signing up for obedience training group classes.

PROTECT YOUR PETS’ HEALTH

Keeping your pets healthy involves giving them the right amounts of food rather than overfeeding, providing them with plenty of opportunities to exercise, and making sure they have wellness checkups each year.

ID YOUR PETS

Have your pets wear ID tags on their collar, and keep their microchip information updated. If they haven’t been microchipped yet, think about having this done. Microchipping makes it easier to find pet owners when pets get lost. If your pets ever get loose, having ID tags and being microchipped means you have a much higher likelihood of being reunited with them quickly.

HAVE PETS FIXED

Having pets spayed or neutered helps you become a responsible pet owner overall. Spaying and neutering reduce pet overpopulation problems that contribute to crowded animal shelters. This procedure also provides pets with health benefits, such as a lower risk of certain types of cancer. Pets who are spayed or neutered also have fewer behavioral problems.

KEEP HARMFUL ITEMS OUT OF REACH

From chocolate to cleaning products, your home has items that can be harmful to your pets if they ingest them or are otherwise exposed to them. Go through your home, and make sure that potentially harmful items are stored in areas that your pets can’t get to. This gives you more peace of mind about having your pets roam through your apartment, especially when you’re not home.
