Coors FieldCoors Field serves as the home of the Colorado Rockies. This Major League Baseball team gives sports fans in Denver a great team to root for throughout the season. When you’re cheering on the Rockies at one of their home games, keep these interesting facts about Coors Field in mind.

BOTH YOUNG AND OLD

Coors Field hasn’t been around that long compared to many other sports stadiums and arenas in the U.S. Although it was built just 23 years ago, it’s actually among the oldest stadiums in the MLB’s National League. In fact, Coors Field is the third oldest one.

PREHISTORIC INSPIRATION

The Colorado Rockies’ mascot, a dinosaur named Dinger, might seem like an unusual choice as far as mascots go. However, it’s a fitting one for this stadium’s team. During the construction of Coors Field, workers unearthed a dinosaur skull. After having it examined, historians consider it to be roughly 66 million years old.

MILE HIGH SEATING

Despite Denver’s nickname as the Mile High City, the Rockies don’t actually play on a field that’s one mile high. Most of the seats in the stadium don’t reach that high either. If you want to make sure that you’re sitting at least a mile high from the ground, you’ll need to sit in the 20th row in the upper deck or higher. The 20th row and its purple seats are 5,280 feet, or one mile, above ground level.

HEATED FIELD

Snow in the Denver area during spring and fall would normally interfere with baseball season. To prevent this from happening, Coors Field has a heated infield, as well as heated grass. The construction of the stadium included putting 45 miles of cable below the infield and grass to get rid of any snow that falls, so it won’t ruin the playing surface. These cables also help keep the grass looking green and healthy during summer when the air tends to be drier than usual.
