When people think of February they often think of Valentine’s Day, but it is also a month dedicated to raising awareness about a very serious problem: heart disease. To help raise awareness about this disease, we have gathered some strategies residents of our apartments in Denver can use to help prevent heart disease.

MAKE AN EFFORT TO QUIT SMOKING CIGARETTES

Everyone knows smoking can cause problems with your breathing, but very few people know it can also cause problems to your heart. Studies have shown the chemicals in cigarettes can damage the blood vessels around the heart which may lead to significant plaque buildup in the arteries. When plaque builds up in the arteries, it puts you at risk of having a heart attack.

START FOLLOWING A HEART-HEALTHY DIET

What you eat could dramatically increase your risk of developing heart disease. Consuming foods that are high in saturated fats and cholesterol can lead to a plaque building up in your arteries. In an effort to reduce your risk of developing heart disease, you should follow a heart-healthy diet.

Some of the foods you should avoid include:

Deep-fried foods

Pre-packaged snack foods

Foods with lots of margarine

Cookies and crackers with high amounts of sodium and trans fat

Products made with full-fat dairy

Red meats

Processed meats

Foods that are part of a heart-healthy diet include:

Fruits

Vegetables

Whole grains

Fish

Lean meats such as chicken

Low-fat dairy products

Beans

It is okay to occasionally eat some of the not-so-friendly heart-healthy foods, but your diet should include mostly heart-healthy foods.

AIM TO EXERCISE AT LEAST 30 MINUTES A DAY

Daily exercise is the quickest and easiest way to reduce your risk of heart disease. Exercising on a daily basis helps you improve your circulation and allows you to lose weight. Experts recommend that you engage in moderate exercise for at least 30 minutes a day.

Choose to make The Apartments at Denver Place your new home and you will find it extremely easy to get your 30 minutes of exercise each day. All residents receive full-access membership to Club Form Fitness. In addition, we are located within walking distance to many local shops, restaurants and entertainment venues.
