This refreshing drink has been a classic for generations, but it doesn't have to stay a simple mix of lemon juice, water, and sugar. Here are 5 ways to add a twist!
Add Drama
If you can track down black lemons (ask for "loomi" your local food market), you can create a dramatic twist on this drink. Black lemons are technically dried limes and have an intense yet refreshing citrus taste. Add a few wedges to the glass to show off the rind's unique black color. For a deeper effect, add a spoonful of activated charcoal!
Try Other Fruits
Pink lemonade is often made with grapefruits, or you can try strawberries for a sweeter touch. Consider mixing flavors here (lemon pairs well with a surprising variety of fruits!).
Play With Colors
Try mixing butterfly pea flower tea with your lemonade. The acid of the citrus changes the tea from a deep blue to vivid purples and pinks. One way to really play with this is to freeze the tea into ice cubes. As they melt in the glass of lemonade, watch as a rainbow unfurls in your glass!
Tantalize Your Taste Buds
If you and your guests are adventurous foodies looking to go beyond regular sweetly tart flavors, try experimenting with savory, spicy, and bitter notes. You can add bruised basil leaves to your lemonade, slices of jalapeno for kick, or fresh lavender for intriguing floral-herbal tones.
Springtime Presentation
For a playful presentation of your glass of lemonade, float a few flowers on top. A number of flowers that bloom in the spring are edible, like cherry blossoms!

When chilly weather settles into the Mile High, you’ve got to have a few go-to drinks on hand to warm your body and spirit. The residents of our Denver, Colorado, apartments love these cold-weather cocktails, and we think you will, too!
1. Boozy Chocolate-Covered Cherry Hot Cocoa
Leave the kids’ hot chocolate for another day. These adults-only hot cocoas are perfect for curing the winter blues. Thanks to a bit of brandy and creme de cacao, your body will feel warm and toasty long after the liquid is gone. Be careful not to drink too many! You’ll definitely want to slurp these cups slowly.
2. Boozy S’Mores Cocktails
If you plan to entertain during a blizzard-inspired snow day, this is the cocktail you’ll want to have on-hand. It’s got just enough child-like whimsy to tug on your heartstrings, but the ingredients are definitely only intended for those 21 and up.
3. Hot Vanilla Milk
Having trouble sleeping? Simply looking for a way to pass the time as you sit by the window and watch the snow fall? Hot vanilla milk will calm your nerves and put you right to sleep when it’s time to lay your head on the pillow.
4. Chai-Spiced Hot Toddy
Warm dark rum will warm your body from your toes to your eyelashes, while the honey and ginger rush in to provide certain healing effects to the body. If you’ve got a stuffy nose or think you’re coming down with a cold, a chai-spiced hot toddy will help clear the airways and make breathing a little easier.
5. Cranberry Orange Yule Mule
Nobody said every wintry drink has to be warm. A cranberry orange yule mule incorporates plenty of holiday flavors while keeping true to the cold copper cup that traditionally houses mules. Toss some fresh (or frozen) cranberries on top, and you’ve got a beautiful cup that’s meant to make this season brighter. This is a great drink to offer if you’re serving up a holiday brunch.
