Just like humans, pets can become dehydrated and overheated, especially during sweltering summer temperatures. Dogs in particular only sweat from non-furry areas like their paws and nose, so excessive heat can impact them very quickly. Here are four tips for keeping your furry friends cool this summer.

1.  Walk Pets During Cooler Hours

If it feels too hot for a walk to you, it’s definitely too hot for pets. Consider scheduling walks for early in the morning and in the evening once the air and pavement have cooled off a bit. Avoid outings in midday, as hot asphalt can burn pets' tender paws. When walks during hot temps are necessary, keep your pup on the grass whenever possible. Bring along a collapsible bowl and a bottle of water to keep pets hydrated during long walks.

2.  Provide Pets with Shade Outdoors

If you plan to head take your pet on an outdoor adventure to a nearby lake or for a mountain hike, plan ahead to provide shade for both humans and pets. Bring along a tarp, shade screen or cloth and string it up to create a shelter from the sun's unforgiving rays. It’s important to remember that even with shade, dehydration and overheating can occur after extended periods. Bring along ample water, and be aware of any sign that your pet is uncomfortable.

3.  Have Fun With Water Elements

Pets who enjoy water can take respite in a number of pet-friendly Denver parks that have water features like ponds, lakes, puppy pools and water sprinklers. However, it’s important to avoid letting your pup drink water from certain watering holes, as there may be toxic blue-green algae present. Keep an eye on pets while in the water, and don’t allow them to stray too far from shore.

4.  Invest in Summer Grooming

If your pet has a longer coat, a professional grooming to lighten the fur load this summer could help your furry friend—even cats—feel much cooler. Be sure to talk to the groomer to ensure that the hair isn’t cut too short, as pets can sunburn just as easily as humans do. Invest in a pet-safe sunscreen to utilize before long walks or summer outings.
