Your pets want to take part in your delicious cooking, but certain foods are not safe for them. Keep these foods in mind this Thanksgiving while you are cooking in our Denver apartments.
Foods Your Pets Should Not Eat
Many foods we eat are not pet friendly. Take time to become familiar with this list to ensure you are not endangering your pet this Thanksgiving:
- Turkey bones. Turkey bones are a choking hazard. If your pet does manage to swallow one, it's possible the bones can puncture their organs (like the stomach), which could result in serious injuries.
- Turkey skin. Fatty foods like turkey skin can wreak havoc on an animal's digestive system. With enough fat, the pancreas can become inflamed and cause pancreatitis.
- Stuffing. Most stuffing recipes include three ingredients that are toxic to pets: scallions, garlic, and onions. Unless you make your stuffing from scratch and omit these ingredients, it's safer to avoid giving your pet stuffing this Thanksgiving.
- Mushrooms. Dogs and mushrooms do not mix well. It's possible for your dog to experience vomiting and seizures after consuming mushrooms.
- Nutmeg. Due to its mild hallucinogenic property, nutmeg can negatively impact pets. They may experience vomiting or seizures. If you are giving your pet sweet potatoes, make sure they are nutmeg free.
- Alcohol. Your pet should never have alcohol under any circumstances. It can result in a long list of medical issues and cause death.
- Nuts. Nuts are incredibly high in fats, which are difficult for pets to digest. Avoid feeding your pet nuts if you want to help prevent pancreatitis.
- Dough. Yeast can cause life-threatening illnesses in pets. Feeding raw dough to pets can cause them to suffer painful symptoms and often results in emergency hospitalization.
Pets are like family, and you want to keep them safe. They might whine or beg, but be sure to keep these foods away from your pets this Thanksgiving. They may not appreciate it, but you will still have them around for another Thanksgiving next year. New Year’s is a time for reflecting on the past 12 months while looking ahead to the upcoming year. We often make New Year’s resolutions for ourselves, but have you ever considered making them for your pets? Consider these ideas for New Year’s resolutions for your dog:
Go On More Walks
There are few things dogs love more than being taken on a walk, and your pup will go bananas if you take them out more! It’s also great for their digestion, weight control, and overall health. They’ll even sleep better, which means more sleep for you, too. A simple stroll around the neighborhood is enough, or drive to a park and try a trail you haven't been on before to keep things interesting for both of you.
Teach Them a New Trick
Dogs are great learners and happier when stimulated. Resolve to teach them a new trick each month (or at least every other month). It will be great fun for both of you, and your pet will love the extra attention.
Find a Great Dog Park
Another way to ensure your dog gets plenty of exercise is by bringing them to a dog park. Research parks in your area and resolve to take them at least once per week. Many dog parks have online reviews submitted by other dog owners so you will be able to screen for the best features, park hours, and more! It's a great way to socialize your dog and meet other pet owners, too.
Get Their Teeth Cleaned
Dogs can get cavities just like humans. While you likely take your dog to the vet for annual checkups, many dog owners skip teeth cleaning and addressing oral health. Make this the year you get your dog's teeth cleaned from a qualified veterinarian.
Switch to Higher Quality Food
If you haven't already, start feeding your dog food that is customized to their size, breed and health needs. Your vet can assist you in finding the ideal brand and type.
The New Year is full of new possibilities! When you’re making your own resolutions, take the time to make some for your dog as well. If you'd like to call the Apartments at Denver Place home, contact us to find out more about our pet-friendly Denver apartments.

Just like humans, pets can become dehydrated and overheated, especially during sweltering summer temperatures. Dogs in particular only sweat from non-furry areas like their paws and nose, so excessive heat can impact them very quickly. Here are four tips for keeping your furry friends cool this summer.
1. Walk Pets During Cooler Hours
If it feels too hot for a walk to you, it’s definitely too hot for pets. Consider scheduling walks for early in the morning and in the evening once the air and pavement have cooled off a bit. Avoid outings in midday, as hot asphalt can burn pets' tender paws. When walks during hot temps are necessary, keep your pup on the grass whenever possible. Bring along a collapsible bowl and a bottle of water to keep pets hydrated during long walks.
2. Provide Pets with Shade Outdoors
If you plan to head take your pet on an outdoor adventure to a nearby lake or for a mountain hike, plan ahead to provide shade for both humans and pets. Bring along a tarp, shade screen or cloth and string it up to create a shelter from the sun's unforgiving rays. It’s important to remember that even with shade, dehydration and overheating can occur after extended periods. Bring along ample water, and be aware of any sign that your pet is uncomfortable.
3. Have Fun With Water Elements
Pets who enjoy water can take respite in a number of pet-friendly Denver parks that have water features like ponds, lakes, puppy pools and water sprinklers. However, it’s important to avoid letting your pup drink water from certain watering holes, as there may be toxic blue-green algae present. Keep an eye on pets while in the water, and don’t allow them to stray too far from shore.
4. Invest in Summer Grooming
If your pet has a longer coat, a professional grooming to lighten the fur load this summer could help your furry friend—even cats—feel much cooler. Be sure to talk to the groomer to ensure that the hair isn’t cut too short, as pets can sunburn just as easily as humans do. Invest in a pet-safe sunscreen to utilize before long walks or summer outings.
