March is an exciting month filled with anticipation in the Denver area. Not only is it a time for looking forward to spring with its warmer weather, buds, and blooms, but it is also the time when the annual Denver March Powwow has taken place since 1984.
AN ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURE
This year, the Powwow will be held from March 24 to 26 at the Denver Coliseum. As is the case every March, it will celebrate the heritage of Native Americans through singing, dance, storytelling, art and food in one of the largest events of its kind in the country. There will be representatives from nearly 100 tribes and 38 states around the country as well as three Canadian provinces. Upwards of 1,600 dancers will provide visual and auditory entertainment and cultural displays.
There will also be more than 170 booths offering for sale various Native American art and other products such as pottery, beadwork, blankets and jewelry. No cultural event would be complete without authentically inspired food, and the Powwow is no exception to that rule. Delicious options will include Indian tacos and fry bread.
Some of the highlights of the event include the women’s Jingle Dress Dance that includes the delightful sound of the jingling of women’s attire, Grand Entry spectaculars, drum pieces and flag displays. There will be dancing, dancing, and more dancing. The entire event will educate festival goers about a range of Native American ways with incredible fun.
