One of the greatest things about owning a cat is the fact that they are pretty much self-cleaning. However, that doesn’t mean that they still need regular grooming. If you’ve been struggling to find the best way to brush out your cat’s coat or clip their nails, you are not alone. Luckily, with a bit of patience and lots of love, you and your cat can find a happy balance and make sure that they are always looking their best.
3 SIMPLE TIPS FOR GROOMING YOUR CAT
1. MASTER BRUSHING BASICS
To make brushing easier, always brush in the direction that the hair naturally lays and be extra gentle around the belly/chest area. Short-haired cats need a fine-toothed metal comb and long-haired cats require a wide-toothed comb. Additionally, a soft toothbrush can work wonders around your cat’s face.
2. DON’T FORGET BATH TIME
Even though cats are great at keeping themselves pretty clean, they will need baths from time to time. While most cats have an aversion to water, you can make things easier with a few simple steps:
Make sure the bath water is warm and not too hot
Use a shampoo that is made specifically for cats
Place a rubber mat in the bottom of the bath or sink
Fill the bath/tub with 3 to 4 inches of water
Start at their head and gently work the shampoo from head to tail
Rinse thoroughly and avoid pouring water directly on their head
Gently pat dry with a towel
3. MAKE TIME FOR PEDICURES
Cats nails should be clipped regularly to avoid them scratching on things that they shouldn’t, like your skin and furniture. While it can take some time to get your cat to accept nail trimmings, after a while they’ll realize it’s just a regular chore. Help make them feel comfortable by sitting them in your lap with their legs facing out towards yours. Hold them firmly but gently and press lightly on each pad of their toes. Clip close to the quick of the nail and repeat.
