Keeping your closet clean can be a challenge. By following these 3 tips, we feel that residents of apartments in Denver, Colorado, will find it much easier to whip their closets into shape!

Get everything out of the closet.

Take everything out at once. That way, you do not end up with odd items still crammed into random corners. Start asking the hard questions once you have everything in front of you.

When was the last time I wore this?

How often do I wear this color?

Do I still need these shoes given my current lifestyle?

Most people do not wear 80% of what is in their closet. We tend to default to old favorites or the sparkly new thing we want to show off. Anything you have not worn in at least a year should be donated to a charity that can pass your clothing on to someone in need.

Work in hour-long increments.

It helps to break the work down in time increments. That prevents you from getting overwhelmed by the task in front of you. You can work on organizing your shoes for one hour. The next can be devoted to blouses and sweaters, with pants and accessories taking up a third.

You can use shorter increments if that works better for your schedule. The idea is to keep you on track and motivated. Grinding away for two or three hours leaves you prone to just chucking everything back inside and calling it a day.

Use the in-out rule going forward.

We know you do not want to go through another major closet decluttering anytime soon. Following the "in-out" rule helps keep your wardrobe relatively organized. Do not allow yourself to put something new in your closet without removing an old item. Make sure you stick to this rule for even seemingly small things like a new belt or scarf. These are items that tend to cause a lot of the clutter in our closets.
