Bulb FlowersFew things spell spring like brightly blooming flowers from spring bulbs. Not only do they provide a vibrant visual prelude to the beauty of the season to come, but they provide an amazing fragrance that breathes life. Winters in the Colorado high country sometimes seem to residents of apartments in Denver as if they'll never end, and although you can purchase cut flowers even during the middle of a long winter, you also have the option of going for a more natural look and feel. For instance, you can force spring-flowering bulbs to bloom indoors. Here's what you need to do.

Purchase the Bulbs

Regular spring bulbs won't work for this unless you want to leave them in your freezer for at least six weeks, and for most people, this approach simply isn't practical. It's better to buy bulbs that were produced and treated for the purpose of forcing them to bloom indoors. A type of narcissus called Paperwhites is the most popular type of spring-flowering plant for this purpose, but you can also find regular daffodils, tulips, hyacinths and crocus. If you really want to bring a sneak preview of spring into your indoor living space, pick several of these bulbs and put them in various places in your apartment.

Prepare the Growing Space

The best type of growing space for forcing bulbs is a wide, shallow tray designed specifically for this purpose. Fill it with pebbles: Colored pebbles add to the vibrant ambiance, but you can choose all-white or all-blue varieties for a more formal look. Add enough water so that it almost comes up to the rim. Choose a place that receives bright light, but keep in mind that it's not necessary to place bulbs in direct sunlight.

Be Patient

The bulbs should start to send out green shoots from their tops within a week, but it will be several weeks before they bloom. If you're like most people, you'll enjoy watching their progress on a daily basis and will be thrilled when the first petals begin to emerge from the buds.

We've got several floor plans designed to meet the needs and preferences of a variety of lifestyles. Call us today to find out more about life in our Denver apartment community.

Pizza PartyCozy dinner parties at home are making a comeback in Denver, Colorado – and for good reason. They’re casual, affordable and intimate enough for genuine conversation while connecting with family and friends. There’s no need for it to be stressful if you choose a fun theme and ask each person to bring along a related dish.

International Tapas Party

Sampling new dishes in “small plate” servings is an easy way to explore cultures outside your own, so plan an international tapas party. Choose a handful of countries and do some research on the cuisine and customs. Download songs from each region and learn some country-specific dance moves. For example, a Brazilian yuca pot pie appetizer could accompany a song by Brazilian artist Sandy Leah, while one or more guests show off some samba or carimbo dancing. Place cards around the tables printed with trivia, art, maps and artifacts from each locale.

Indoor Picnic

Toss down a padded blanket and comfy floor pillows for an indoor picnic party. Pick up small inexpensive baskets at a dollar store, and give guests their own picnic basket complete with paper plates, napkins, sandwiches and snacks. Fill a large tub with ice and bottles of lemonade, iced tea and sparkling water. Set a fun summer mood with Hawaiian music or Beach Boys tunes and decorate with colorful frisbees, seashells and flower-filled sand pails.

Pizza Night

Why not spice up an ordinary pizza party with exotic or unusual combinations? Let everyone make their own mini pizzas from several “stations” featuring ingredients that work well together. Italian pizzas are a sure bet, so have one station stocked with marina and Alfredo sauces, meat toppings and Italian cheeses. A Greek pizza station can feature pita bread, mizithra and feta cheeses, ground lamb, artichokes and olives. Concoct vegetarian pizzas with gluten-free flatbreads, Indian versions with naan bread and curry sauce, or Thai pizzas using roti bread and peanut sauce.

Whether staying in or having a night on the town, it’s easy to enjoy life when residing in one of our Denver apartments. Stop by today for a private tour and to check our availability.

ClutterAccording to Psychology Today, researchers discovered that people with cluttered homes tend to have higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol. And it's easy to understand why. Unnecessary clutter can make it hard to find the things you need and, according to Princeton University, it can actually distract you from completing tasks. Even if your home is seemingly clean, you may have certain spots that need a deep cleaning for the new year, including these often neglected areas:

Junk Drawers

Do you have trouble finding a pen that actually works in your junk drawer? Does it seem like small items immediately disappear the moment you place them in your junk drawer? Then, it's time to dump that drawer out and toss out all of those old pens and anything else that doesn't work. You may also want to invest in a drawer organizer, so you can keep all of your items carefully sorted.

Under the Sinks

The cabinets under a sink can become stuffed with cleaners, old sponges and other odds and ends. To ensure that you give these cabinets a thorough cleaning, start by emptying everything out from under your sinks. Then evaluate each item and toss out the things that are old and yucky or that you don't use anymore.

File Cabinets

Are your file cabinets overflowing with paperwork because you're just not sure how long you need to keep important documents? Then here are some dates you'll need to know, so you can start purging old documents you no longer need.

  • Tax documents, including your returns — Keep 7 years
  • Bank statements — Keep for 1 to 2 years
  • Credit card statements – Keep 1 year

Cleaning is a great way to start fresh for the New Year. But if you're ready for an even bigger change, then you may be ready for a new home. If so, please come check out our renovated apartments in Denver, CO, which boast city and mountain views. In addition, our amenities include an indoor swimming pool, concierge service and membership to the TruFit Athletic Club and our community was voted with a Top Resident Satisfaction award in 2018. PuppyYour pets want to take part in your delicious cooking, but certain foods are not safe for them. Keep these foods in mind this Thanksgiving while you are cooking in our Denver apartments.

Foods Your Pets Should Not Eat

Many foods we eat are not pet friendly. Take time to become familiar with this list to ensure you are not endangering your pet this Thanksgiving:

  • Turkey bones. Turkey bones are a choking hazard. If your pet does manage to swallow one, it's possible the bones can puncture their organs (like the stomach), which could result in serious injuries.
  • Turkey skin. Fatty foods like turkey skin can wreak havoc on an animal's digestive system. With enough fat, the pancreas can become inflamed and cause pancreatitis.
  • Stuffing. Most stuffing recipes include three ingredients that are toxic to pets: scallions, garlic, and onions. Unless you make your stuffing from scratch and omit these ingredients, it's safer to avoid giving your pet stuffing this Thanksgiving.
  • Mushrooms. Dogs and mushrooms do not mix well. It's possible for your dog to experience vomiting and seizures after consuming mushrooms.
  • Nutmeg. Due to its mild hallucinogenic property, nutmeg can negatively impact pets. They may experience vomiting or seizures. If you are giving your pet sweet potatoes, make sure they are nutmeg free.
  • Alcohol. Your pet should never have alcohol under any circumstances. It can result in a long list of medical issues and cause death.
  • Nuts. Nuts are incredibly high in fats, which are difficult for pets to digest. Avoid feeding your pet nuts if you want to help prevent pancreatitis.
  • Dough. Yeast can cause life-threatening illnesses in pets. Feeding raw dough to pets can cause them to suffer painful symptoms and often results in emergency hospitalization.

Pets are like family, and you want to keep them safe. They might whine or beg, but be sure to keep these foods away from your pets this Thanksgiving. They may not appreciate it, but you will still have them around for another Thanksgiving next year. If you need a new place for you and your pets, contact our office to learn which floor plans are still available.

HamOn Thanksgiving, most people make a turkey. However, not everyone eats meat and not everyone enjoys turkey. Whether you want to try something new this Thanksgiving or would like to accommodate those who don't want turkey, you may be looking for other options. Here are a few of the top turkey alternatives to serve this Thanksgiving.

Ham

Ham has long been an alternative to turkey on Thanksgiving. In fact, at many large gatherings, you can often find both ham and turkey served. Ham pairs well with all of the traditional side dishes that are served on Thanksgiving, making it a great choice for those who need a turkey substitution or for those who want to offer a different type of meat to their guests.

Seafood Dishes

When you think of Thanksgiving, seafood is not typically what comes to mind. However, seafood can be a great addition to a turkey or can be served as a main course. Salmon can be paired with traditional Thanksgiving fruits, such as cranberry or pomegranate, which creates a seasonally-appropriate meal for those who may not like turkey. If you're looking for a high-end seafood option, both bouillabaisse or lobster tails can be served.

Vegetarian Options

If you have vegetarians in your family, pumpkin ravioli and butternut squash dishes can help to fill up your non-meat eaters. While there are plenty of side dishes vegetarians can fill up on, providing them with a main dish helps to make them feel included and ensures they get a well-balanced meal. These types of dishes are both earthy and hearty, which is perfect for Thanksgiving.

Chicken

Finally, chicken can be served as an alternative to turkey. Chicken is versatile and can be prepared in a number of ways to help it feel more like a Thanksgiving dish. For example, chicken can be prepared with apricots or apples. It can be served with green beans or squash. Mix and match your favorite fall fruits and vegetables to create a wonderful Thanksgiving main dish.

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on all of the things you're thankful for. If you're looking for apartments in Denver, Colorado, you may be thankful to find the perfect new place to call home. The Apartments at Denver Place offers amazing views, a long list of amenities, and spacious floor plans. Contact us today to discuss the availability of our apartments.

Dinner PartyIf you're planning on hosting a dinner party and have never done so before, the most important thing to remember is that successful dinner parties depend on effective planning. The following preparations below are designed to give you the breathing space to relax and enjoy your own dinner party by minimizing hosting tasks.

Stick With Tried-and-True Recipes

Even though you may be tempted to dazzle your guests with your culinary brilliance, your first dinner party isn't the time to try new recipes, so stick with something that's tried and true — even if it's plain old roast chicken or pot roast. It's always wise to prepare the dessert a day in advance so that you don't have to mess with it on the day of the dinner.

Do a Trial Run

If you're fairly inexperienced in the kitchen, consider doing a trial run to help build confidence and to iron out any potential kinks. Prepare the exact menu you're planning to serve at your dinner party, and invite a good friend over whom you trust to be brutally honest about your efforts.

Make a Playlist

Making a playlist designed to last for several hours is a far better approach to mood music than playing it by ear — or worse yet, allowing guests to fiddle with the music. Make a playlist in advance, put it on several minutes before the guests are due to arrive, and forget about it.

Enlist a Friend to Co-Host

Enlisting a friend to act as a backup host helps ensure that you've got your bases covered if you hit snags at some point during the evening. Even if everything goes smoothly, you'll have help with basic hosting duties, such as making sure that beverage glasses are full, putting on a pot of coffee to enjoy with dessert after dinner and keeping track of coats and other outerwear.

Our apartments in Denver, Colorado, feature state-of-the-art kitchens equipped with stainless steel appliances that will make a serious cook out of anyone, and mountain and city views provide stunning backdrops for home entertaining. Please call us today for more information on getting the most out of life in the Mile High City.

bedroomWhen you are decorating a bedroom in a Denver apartment, you need to make deliberate choices to make the most of your space. Below are some tips to help you decorate your bedroom in a pleasing way.

Use light colors on the walls.

If you are concerned about making your bedroom feel more spacious, opt for light-colored decor.

Choose the right furniture.

If your bedroom offers limited floor space, be careful about the furniture you choose. Selecting bulky furniture can cause the bedroom to feel cluttered while choosing smaller, sleeker furniture opens up the space.

Don't overdo it.

Your bedroom is a sacred space that needs to be calm and relaxing so you can rest well at night. Resist the urge to cover your walls in photos or place too many items on surfaces in your bedroom. Instead, focus your efforts on a few good pieces and keep the space simple.

Use rugs and good linens.

If you have a hard floor in your bedroom, using a rug is a great way to make the room feel warmer and more like home. Likewise, investing in some good linens adds both class and comfort to the room.

Focus on storage.

If you have limited space in your bedroom, storage will be one of your most important concerns. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to store your belongings out of sight while maximizing space. Consider purchasing under-the-bed storage boxes and/or benches that open up to allow storage on the interior. Investing in tools to help you keep your closet organized will also help you maximize the effectiveness of the space in your bedroom.

Decorating your bedroom may take some time and effort, but if you follow the tips above, you can create a space you will enjoy for many years to come.

Denver offers a variety of beautiful, spacious apartments for families of all sizes. To learn about available floor plans in Denver, CO apartments, please contact the Apartments at Denver Place today.

carrotsFresh fruits and vegetables are an important part of everyone’s diet. Luckily, Colorado boasts a wide range of in-season ingredients that can be easily found at farmers markets that are close to our stunning apartments in Denver. We’ve gathered mouth-watering recipes that use in-season produce that can help you spice up your weeknight dinner rotation.

Autumn Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables

Find a complete list of the in-season fruits and vegetables available in Colorado right now:

  • Apples

  • Beets

  • Cabbage

  • Carrots

  • Cucumbers

  • Eggplants

  • Grapes

  • Kale

  • Onions

  • Pears

  • Peppers

  • Potatoes

  • Pumpkins

  • Raspberries

  • Snap beans

  • Squash

  • Sweet corn

  • Watermelons

You can enjoy many of these ingredients on their own. You can also easily incorporate them into your favorite weeknight meals, or try something new altogether!

Creamy Pumpkin Chicken Soup

Slow cooker meals are a lifesaver, especially with a busy week of work, school, social activities and more. Thanks to an incredibly short prep time, you can easily start this recipe before you leave for the day and come home to a tasty, home-cooked meal. You can use a can of pumpkin puree or puree your own. Simply combine the main ingredients (pumpkin, chicken, corn, peppers, garlic, and potatoes) with spices, cheese and broth before placing the slow cooker on low.

Steak, Peppers and Pear Salad

A salad can be a refreshing midweek meal. You can follow this recipe to a T, or simply spice it up with peppers, onions and even a sprinkle of watermelon if you are feeling experimental. Combine pan-seared flank steak with your desired fruits and vegetables, and enjoy.

Herb-Crusted Fish With Ratatouille

Fish is a healthy source of omega fatty acids, and this recipe with ratatouille on the side is an incredibly healthy meal you should make an autumn staple in your weekly dinners. Basil, eggplant, squash and tomato ratatouille is the perfect complement to flaky, white fish.

YogaNot everyone is a morning person. Some of us stumble out of bed and struggle to make it out the door on time. But what we do in the morning feeds the rest of the day. Here are a few morning habits that can set you up for success all day.

Keep Your Phone on its Charger

Do you start scrolling through emails and swiping through social media before you get out of bed? You may be jumping into the day with the wrong mindset. Staying away from emails and social media during the first hour of the day lets you establish a positive outlook, gives you time to reflect, and allows you to accomplish early goals before feeling rushed and pressured about the day’s schedule.

Make the Bed

It takes only minutes, but making your bed has a significant impact on your outlook. Aside from helping your bedroom look tidy, making the bed lets you check something off your to-do list first thing in the morning and provides an immediate sense of accomplishment.

Drink Water

Staying hydrated throughout the day starts as soon as you wake up. A glass of cold water will help you feel energized. Or swap out a cup of coffee for a mug of hot water with lemon. This simple practice will jump-start your metabolism and support your immune system.

Exercise

Whether it’s a yoga routine in your living room, laps at an indoor pool or a visit to the gym, exercise is a great way to start the day. Not only will a morning workout help you stay physically healthy, but it can also help battle anxiety. Exercising in the morning has the added benefit of increasing energy levels in a way that will sustain you throughout the day.

Organize Your Day

Spend five peaceful minutes looking over the plan for the day, without letting it overwhelm you. Look at your schedule and commit at least the bulk of it to memory so that you know where you need to be at what times. Then, simplify your to-do list. Narrow the list to the top three to five priorities and establish a plan for accomplishing each item.
